In 1983 we were invited to demonstrate making our Norwegian style pottery at the first Norsk Høstfest in Minot, North Dakota. Our youngest son Ben was 5 months old, so Gene was the main attraction throwing pots on the wheel. Princess Astrid introduced herself to Gene as a fellow potter, warmly shaking his hand. He demonstrated making this pitcher for her, which Lucy carved with a rosemaling style. Astrid bought two of his large horse head ale bowls to take back to Norway with her, and the Høstfest officials bought the rest of them. We felt she was interested in our work, not only because it looked Scandinavian, but because she valued the skill of doing hand-made pottery with a very warm welcome.
